Carpentry and Cabinets - Glossary of Terms:

 

Arris: An arris is the term for a sharp edge on wood where two edges meet. It is common to sand this edge to make it less sharp.
Awl: This is a pointy tool used for marking or drilling a small hole.
Bandsaw: A machine that has a continuous blade that has teeth on one edge and travels across two or three wheels most bandsaws have a tilting table for cutting bevels.
Bead: plane-A molding plane for cutting beading or a decorative edge.
Belt: sander-A sander that has a revolving continuous sanding belt that is passed over the work, the machine must be kept moving as the belt will remove material quite quickly and if the machine is allowed to remain stationary, too much material will be removed.
Bevel: This is an angle on the edge of two meeting surfaces. On a piece of wood a bevel take the sharpness of the edge, on a chisel it allows the chisel to cut in nearer to surface.
Biscuit: jointer-Power tool that is used to cut slots into which biscuits or plates are placed for strengthening joints.
Bind: This is where a saw blade jams in the cut or kerf it has made, this happens when the set of the saw teeth is incorrect.
Blade: The main metal part of a tool. In the case of a saw it is the part that has the teeth, for a hand plane it is the cutter with a sharp edge.
Brace: Used for drilling or boring has a chuck for holding various sizes and shapes of drill bits.
Bull-Nose: plane-A small metal plane with a short nose which enables it to be worked close to corners some are equipped with noses that are adjustable or detachable which enables the plane to work clear into the corner.
Chuck Key: This it a cog type tool to help tighten the jaws of a chuck onto the shank of a tool.
Chuck: This is a device on a tool, a drill for example, that has teeth that expand and contract to hold the shank of a tool, in the case of a drill it will hold the drill bit.
Circular Saw: A saw that has a spinning blade that is circular.
Clamp: This is a device with adjustable jaws for holding things. They are commonly used to hold parts of a project together while glue is drying.
Claw: A claw on a hammer is the forked and curve shaped rear part of the head that is used to remove nails.
Clearance:
Coping Saw: A saw in which the blade is held under tension in a metal frame used for cutting thin wood and coping the backs of joints (removing the back edge at an angle allowing one piece of wood to overlap another.
Countersink: a Bit used to drill a recess to allow a screw head to seat flush or below the surface.
Cross-Cut: saw-Saw used for cutting across the grain teeth are 5 - 8 points per inch.
Dowel: Dowel is round wood and can be obtained in long lengths. When it is cut short it can be use as a jointing device to fit in matching holds in two pieces of wood to locate their position in relation to each other accurately.
Drill Bit: This is a tool for cutting round holes. They come is a wide variety of sizes and feature a spiral flute along their body to assist the removal of waste wood.
Dry Fit: This is a term used when checking to see if a joint fits together. It is dry because no glue is applied to the joint.
Dust Mask: Safety protection for your breathing and is a mask that has pores that allow breathing but prevent fine dust passing through and into your lungs.
Grain: Wood grain. Fibers in the wood, also referred to as grain, run in specific directions. The grain direction should always be considered when making cuts or sanding as working with the grain can reduce tear-out.
Header: A beam that rests horizontally above a door or window. The header is used to support anything above the opening.
Jig: A guide that makes cutting pieces of lumber faster and more consistent. Jigs come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be made to fit just about any project need.
Kickback: Kickback happens when a power tool throws a piece of lumber backwards. This occurs whenever the wood gets trapped in the blade or is pushed through at an awkward angle. Most saws have kickback plates that help prevent this unwanted hazard.
